About
Dr. Canete, who specializes in colorectal surgery, offers a full range of approaches to treating diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. In addition, he brings a minimally invasive approach to a variety of general surgical procedures. He routinely performs laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease, and performs transanal minimally invasive surgery for rectal polyps and tumors. He is also experienced with the da Vinci surgical system and performs robotic-assisted colorectal surgery. Dr. Canete completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (formerly known as the Lahey Clinic) in Burlington, Mass. He also completed a research fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he studied pancreatic cancer chemotherapy resistance. Dr. Canete completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Massachusetts, and completed additional surgical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He began his surgical training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, before serving four years on active duty at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Mass., the military's premier institute for studying human performance at terrestrial extremes (for example, extreme heat, cold, or high altitude). As the research medical officer, he supervised the human subject safety program and oversaw all aspects of test subject care. He earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and holds a Master's degree in public health, with a focus in epidemiology and biostatistics, from Boston University. Board certified in both general surgery and colorectal surgery, Dr. Canete is also a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
